Academy Happenings – 12/17/16

O Come Let Us Adore HimThe days are shorter now and the darkness descends upon us so early. However, at Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy, the bright lights of our children are shining forth every day!!!! They continue to amaze me with
their curiosity and creative thinking. As I go into the classrooms each day, I see their excitement as they are challenged by our very talented faculty.

In addition to pushing our students academically, we are developing students with strong moral character to make the best possible decisions and to reach out to those less fortunate. Advent is a time of joyful waiting and expectation. Just as the world waited so long for the coming of the Savior, we too wait His arrival. Advent is also about hope. We know that the world is not a perfect place. It has plenty of beauty, but that’s not all…

Finally we believe in celebrations at Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy. Both campuses put on spectacular Christmas shows. It was a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season!!!!!

In the midst of the Christmas rush, may you find some quiet moments to see more clearly the priceless gifts of God’s love and family bonds. May you and your families experience many blessings this Christmas and New

Academy Happenings

Douglaston Campus Christmas Show
What a wonderful event took place on Friday evening at Saint Francis Prep. The students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 sang and danced their hearts out!!!!! The students made us proud!!!! Special thanks to the entire faculty and staff for going above and beyond, working with their students to prepare for this special event. A very special thank you to Anthony Russo, the Academy’s excellent music teacher, who produced another spectacular event!!!!

Christmas Liturgy
In a week, we will be celebrating the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Thursday, 22 December 2016 is the Academy’s last day before we go off on Christmas recess. The entire Divine Wisdom community will be coming together at Saint Robert Bellarmine Church, Wednesday morning, 21 December, at 10:30am to celebrate liturgy together. Monsignor Sherman and Father Lee will be concelebrating this very special mass, joined by the student choirs from both campuses. We will be packing up all of the children from Grade 1 through Grade 8, at the Douglaston campus, boarding buses at 10am and heading over to Bayside. We are hoping that if Academy family members are available, they will join us at this very special liturgical celebration.

Dressing Up
Various times during the school year, students have an opportunity to dress “down,” being able to take a break from wearing the Academy’s uniform and wear less formal attire. As we approach the final days before Christmas recess, I am writing to make a special request for Thursday, 22 December 2016, our last school day before Christmas. Students will not be required to wear their school uniforms on this day, but we are requesting that they get “dressed up.” Boys are being asked to wear dress pants and a button down shirt, if willing, also a tie. Girls could wear a dress, or dress pants. For this very special day, students are not to wear jeans, t-shirts, sweat shirts, sneakers or UGGs.

We would be most appreciative if you would support this request and have your child wear more formal attire.

Gala 2017
Divine Wisdom will be holding its 5th Gala on Saturday April 8, 2017. Mark your calendars for this exciting event. The Gala is the largest fund raiser of the year with every dollar earned being poured back into Academy programs. More importantly, it is a fun opportunity for the Academy community of both campuses to
come together to celebrate the amazing artwork of our children and enjoy a great evening with fellow members of the Academy family.

In order to ensure a successful event, we need lots of volunteers. Planning for this event literally began as we packed up last year’s event. This is a great opportunity to get those fundraising hours completed. While some of the hours occur during the weekend of the event, there are many chances to fulfill your commitments between now and the date of the event. Some of the hours needed are quite flexible. They allow you to set your own hours, and in some cases work from the comfort of your own home. Sign-ups for the event will open in Sign-Up Genius on Monday, December 19th, at 5pm. As usual, you will be able to access the site from the Academy’s home page.
