Dear Families,

Thank you to everyone who attended Parent-Teacher conferences last week! It was a pleasure seeing everyone again as we gear up for the home stretch of first grade!

Reading/Writing

This week we will work towards completing our Geography unit. The students will be working in groups to create their own maps using a map key, compass rose, and cardinal directions. April is poetry month. Each week in the month of April we will focus on a different type of poem.

Spelling

This week we will be working the blend -ow (Ex: town, brown). Students are responsible for the 10 spelling words, and are asked to review the sight words. The spelling packet will again consist of two activities (Monday and Tuesday nights homework), and one loose-leaf page for sentences (Wednesday nights homework). They will study on Thursday for Friday’s assessment.

Spelling Words:

how

down

brown

clown

crowd

town

now

cow

frown

growl

Math

This week we will continue Chapter 8. In this chapter we are learning how to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Drawing pictures seems to be the best strategy for most of the students.

Religion

April 7th after our 9am First Friday liturgy the students will get to watch the Live Stations of the Cross featuring the 7th and 8th grade students at St. Robert’s. All are welcome to attend!

Homework & Notes

Please remove any papers from the red folders – some are getting very full!

Some student’s are forgetting to do their weekly reading response journals. Below is the list of the day that your child is responsible for completing the journal entry. As a reminder it should be based on a book from their book baggies, and they may answer any of the questions posted inside the notebook.

Monday Christopher, Aliveyah, Felipe, Lucas, Chris, David
Tuesday Mason, Armen, Crescent
Wednesday London, Joshua, Samantha
Thursday Simone, Anais, Hunter

Of course sometimes things come up and you can just complete the journal on a different day, but it should be completed once a week!

I love reading the ones that have been coming in! Keep up the great work!

News & Reminders

If you would like to purchase a book from Scholastic this month I have extended the date to Friday, March 31st.

THANK YOU ALL!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Collalto

Dear Families,

As we continue through March I hope our “lion” days are over and we have more lamb days ahead!

Reading/Writing

Last week we talked about the difference between a lion and lamb day and wrote about what each would look like. We also created fun lion and lamb crafts that are hanging in the classroom. This week we will continue our Geography unit. The students learned about landforms last week. This week we will be learning about parts of a map including vocabulary such as, map key, compass rose, and cardinal directions.

Spelling

This week we will be working the suffixes –ful and -ly (Ex: wonderful, kindly). Students are responsible for the 10 spelling words, and are asked to review the sight words. The spelling packet will again consist of two activities (Monday and Tuesday nights homework), and one loose-leaf page for sentences (Wednesday nights homework). They will study on Thursday for Friday’s assessment.

Spelling Words:

slowly

careful

quickly

useful

painful

playful

sadly

gladly

nicely

wonderful

Math

This week we will begin Chapter 8. In this chapter we will learn how to add and subtract two-digit numbers. A fun home activity you can try is using a jar and pennies or buttons to work with your child to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Start with 11 pennies in the jar. Have your child add 13 pennies. Ask your child to explain a way to find the sum of 11 and 13. Then count with your child to find how many pennies in all. Repeat with different quantities each day. Work with your child to subtract numbers as well.

Religion

We will continue to learn about the season of Lent and our preparation for Easter.

This week we will began Chapter 19 about forgiveness. In this chapter we will be discussing the sacrement of Reconciliation or confession. We will also read the story about the prodigal son, and discussed why his father was willing to forgive him.

Homework & Notes

Report cards will be in your child’s red folder tomorrow, Monday, March 20th providing you have met all your financial obligations to the school.

News & Reminders

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held this Tuesday, March 21st most of you have already signed up! I look forward to seeing you then! If you have not yet signed up please do so on the Sign Up Genius on the DWCA website by TONIGHT!

Students will be dismissed at 12pm on Tuesday, March 21st. Any student attending after school must bring their own lunch.

Thank you all!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Collalto
